Air travel

Most international flights arrive at London Heathrow (180 miles from Exeter), however, there are several flights daily from Paris and Amsterdam to Bristol Airport (66 miles from Exeter).

It is also possible to fly to Exeter airport (two miles from the Met Office).

* From Heathrow Airport

  • By Train

    First take the Heathrow Express train from Heathrow Airport to London Paddington rail station. The web site ( has the timetable and online booking. This train runs every 15 minutes and the ride is between 15 and 23 minutes. An Express Class Single ticket bought online is 14.50, bought at a ticket machine at the airport is 15.50 and bought onboard is 17.50.

    Next, at the London Paddington train station (, take a train to Exeter St Davids station which usually takes 2 hours 15 minutes. Use the Journey Planner feature to find train times and costs.

    Three types of tickets are available: advance, saver/cheap day and open tickets. Advance tickets must be purchased by 18:00 the day before travel, are valid for a specific train only and are the cheapest. Saver/Cheap Day tickets can be bought at the station when you arrive, must be used on the date shown on the ticket and are available only for certain times of the day. Open tickets are valid on any train for the date shown on the ticket with no reservations required, although they are usually available on a longer distance journey.

  • By bus

    There are roughly 12 National Express coaches a day between Heathrow Airport bus station and Exeter bus station. The duration of the trip is 3.5 to 4 hours. The full timetable is on the National Express web site.

  • By Taxi

    If you are traveling with several people, it may be more economical to take a taxi from Heathrow to Exeter. More information on this can be found at

    * From Bristol Airport

    Bristol Airport is 66 miles from Exeter.

    You can take the bus from Bristol Airport to Bristol Temple Meads railway station. The bus runs every 20 minutes and the journey takes about 25 minutes. The full timetable is available at the Bristol Airport web site.

    From Bristol Temple Meads station there are regular trains to Exeter St Davids (one per hour on average). The train trip takes about an hour. The full timetable is available at the National Rail Enquiries web site.

    * From Exeter Airport

    Follow the A30 and the road signs toward Exeter city centre. After going under the M5, go straight across the first roundabout. Take the second turn on the right in FitzRoy Road. Follow the road around the Met Office building.
